Texas requires no pre-licensing hours for a Life license. You can schedule your exam as soon as you are ready.

First, make sure you are studying for the right exam

Texas issues two different licenses that people both call “the life insurance license.” They are separate exams with separate content outlines. Picking the wrong one is the most expensive mistake you can make before you even start studying.

This page covers

Life Agent

Exam InsTX-Life01

Life insurance and annuities only. Term, whole, universal, variable, and indexed life; fixed and variable annuities; life-based riders. Does not let you sell health, accident, or HMO products.

Life, Accident, Health & HMO

Exam InsTX-LAH05

These are the published question counts from the Pearson VUE content outline, not an even split. Our practice banks and full-length exam use the same weighting, so the sections that carry the most exam weight get the most study time.

Note how heavy the Texas law portion is: 30 of 80 scored questions, 37.5% of the exam. Generic national life insurance material will not carry you through it.

What you get in this Texas life exam prep course

Blueprint-weighted question bank

Every question maps to a section of content outline #124401, and the bank is weighted to the published question counts. You will spend 25% of your practice on statutes common to life and health because that is 20 of the 80 scored questions.

Full-length exam simulator

An 80-question timed exam that matches the real split of 50 general questions and 30 Texas law questions. Randomized order on every attempt, so you learn the material rather than the sequence.

Heavy Texas statute coverage

The Texas law portion is more than a third of the exam. We cover TDI and Commissioner authority, producer licensing and CE, unfair methods and rebating, policy provisions and free look, advertising and illustrations, replacement rules, annuity best-interest standards, and the guaranty association.

Annuities taught properly

Fixed, variable, and indexed annuities, payout options, the exclusion ratio, LIFO taxation on nonqualified withdrawals, and suitability. Annuities are inside the Life Agent authority and students routinely underprepare for them.

AI tutor on every lesson

Ask why an answer is wrong and get a plain-language explanation. It quizzes one question at a time and targets your weakest sections using your actual results, at no extra cost.

Lifetime access, one payment

No subscription and no expiry. If you push your exam date back a few months, your course is still there. Retake every practice exam as many times as you want.

Texas life insurance exam questions, answered

How many questions are on the Texas life insurance exam?

The Texas Life Agent exam (InsTX-Life01) has 80 scored questions plus 10 unscored pretest items, for 90 total. The 80 scored questions split into 50 general life insurance questions and 30 Texas law questions. You get 120 minutes.

What score do I need to pass the Texas life insurance exam?

You need a scaled score of 70. That is not the same as answering 70% of questions correctly. TDI sets the scaled passing standard, and Pearson VUE reports your result as pass or fail with a diagnostic breakdown by section.

Do I need pre-licensing education for a Texas life insurance license?

No. Texas does not require pre-licensing course hours for the Life Agent license. You can register for the exam directly. That is exactly why our Texas Life course is priced as exam prep rather than as a filed pre-licensing course.

What is the difference between the Texas Life Agent license and the Life, Accident, Health and HMO license?

The Life Agent license (exam InsTX-Life01) covers life insurance and annuities only. The General Lines Agent license for Life, Accident, Health and HMO (exam InsTX-LAH05) adds health, accident, and HMO authority. If you plan to sell health insurance or Medicare products, you want the Life, Accident, Health and HMO course instead. If you are selling life and annuities, the Life Agent course is the right one.

How much is the Texas life insurance exam?

The exam fee is set by Pearson VUE and paid directly to them when you schedule, separate from any course. Check Pearson VUE's current Texas insurance rates before you register, since the fee changes. You will also pay a TDI application fee and a fingerprinting fee.

Is this course weighted to the real Texas exam?

Yes. Our section weighting mirrors Pearson VUE content outline #124401 question for question: 15 on Types of Policies, 15 on Riders and Provisions, 12 on Application and Underwriting, 8 on Retirement Concepts, 20 on statutes common to life and health, and 10 on statutes specific to life. The Texas law portion is 30 of 80 scored questions, so we weight it heavily rather than treating every section equally.

How long does it take to study for the Texas life insurance exam?

Most students who pass on the first attempt put in 20 to 30 hours over two to four weeks. Because you get lifetime access, you can move faster or slower without losing the course.

How much does your Texas life insurance exam prep cost?

$49.99 one time with lifetime access and no subscription. Comparable Texas life exam prep from Kaplan or ExamFX typically runs $200 to $400 with time-limited access. There is a 7-day money-back guarantee if you have completed less than 25% of the course.
