How to get your Virginia Personal Lines license
- 1
Pick your line of authority
Virginia P&C lines map to the same NAIC framework as most states: P&C combined, Personal Lines, or specialty lines. Most new producers start with combined P&C.
- 2
Schedule fingerprinting through Fieldprint
Virginia uses Fieldprint for producer fingerprinting (different from Texas, which uses IdentoGO). Schedule online at fieldprintvirginia.com.

Study with our exam prep course
Virginia doesn't mandate state-approved pre-licensing, but the exam covers Va. Code §38.2 in detail — particularly licensing rules (Section I) and unique state coverages (auto financial responsibility, FAIR plan via VPIA).

Schedule your Prometric exam
Virginia exams are delivered by Prometric (not Pearson VUE or PSI). The Bureau of Insurance licensing information bulletin (effective 2024-12-13) lists the current exam fee and registration steps; it showed $35 for the Property and Casualty exam.

Pass the exam (70%)
Virginia's Property and Casualty exam was 135 scored questions in 150 minutes in the Prometric bulletin. The bulletin does not print a pass mark, so confirm the passing score with Prometric or the Bureau of Insurance before you rely on one.

Apply for your license through Sircon
After passing, file your producer license application via Sircon. The Virginia SCC lists a non-refundable $15 processing fee per qualification per application (SCC Lines of Authority and Application Fees page, read 2026-09-30).

Get appointed by an insurer
Same as every state: a producer license alone doesn't let you sell. You need at least one carrier appointment.

Virginia administers the VA Personal Lines Exam, 100 scored questions, a 120-minute time limit, administered by Prometric. The exam fee is $35.
What score do I need to pass?
Virginia does not publish a passing score for this examination, so treat the candidate handbook as the authority rather than any figure quoted elsewhere.
Does Virginia require state-approved prelicensing education?

Check the exemptions listed on the Virginia State Corporation Commission — Bureau of Insurance website before you register and pay for an exam.
Is the practice exam built to the real Virginia exam's format?
Yes. Our practice questions and final exam are weighted to match Prometric INSVA-CIB (client code INSVA) eff. 2024-12-13, section by section - not a generic national blueprint with a state label on it.
