What Illinois requires

Application fee

$250 (reinstatement $500) (Public Adjuster)

State exam

Insurance Producer, Navigator Certificate and Public Adjuster require exams. Limited Lines Producer, Temporary Producer, Surplus Lines Producer and Viatical Settlement Broker do not.

Pre-licensing education

Insurance producer applicants must pass both the required exam and the pre-licensing exam. Limited Lines Producer and Temporary Producer are exempt from pre-licensing and exams. More than twelve months after expiration, an applicant must retake both the pre-licensing education requirement and the state exam. No hour count is printed.

Fingerprints and background check

Public Adjuster applicants are deferred for fingerprinting, and fingerprints must be on file with the department before a public adjuster licence is issued. No general fingerprint requirement is stated for standard producer applicants.

How to apply

All applications must be filed through NIPR and all fees paid by EFT in the NIPR system; paper applications have not been accepted since 1 July 2023.

License term and renewal

The licence granted runs no less than eighteen months and no more than twenty-nine months. Navigator certificates are issued for one year. Temporary Producer licences expire after ninety days and do not renew.

Also worth knowing

New resident producers cannot apply online for five days after completing all exam parts through Pearson VUE. Reinstatement within twelve months is exempt from the exam but must meet certified education requirements.
