Times are the limits on CDI's examinations page. PSI's Candidate Information Bulletin (February 13, 2025) allots a little more (for example 98 minutes for Property, 105 for Life) because up to ten unscored questions are added to each exam.

How to study for the California insurance exam

  1. Pick your exam and open its objectives. Each California license has its own exam. Download the CDI License Examination Objectives for that exam; they list every topic the exam can test.
  2. Know the length and the passing score. Property, Casualty, Life and Accident and Health are 75 questions in 1.5 hours; Personal Lines is 90 in 2 hours; the combined exams are 150 in 3 hours. Producer exams need 60%, adjuster exams 70%.
  3. Study the heaviest areas first. The objectives weight some areas far more than others. On the Property exam, personal lines is 38% and commercial coverages 30%; on Life, 49 of 75 questions are on life insurance itself.
  4. Take timed practice exams at full length. Practice at the real question count and time limit until you score comfortably above the passing mark, then review every missed question against the lesson that teaches it.
  5. Schedule the exam, then finish the licensing steps. After you pass, submit fingerprints before your license application, and complete the 12-hour ethics and California Insurance Code course before the license is issued. You do not need the 12-hour course to sit the exam.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I find free California insurance exam practice questions?

This page has free timed quizzes for Property and Casualty, Life, and Accident and Health, and each California license has a free practice exam page linked below. All questions are written to the California Department of Insurance License Examination Objectives.

Are these the real California insurance exam questions?

No. The real exam questions are confidential. These are original practice questions written to the same CDI objectives and weighted the way the exam is, so you practice the topics the exam actually covers.

How hard is the California insurance exam?

Producer exams need 60% to pass and adjuster exams need 70%. The time limit is tight on the 150-question combined exams (3 hours), so practicing at full length matters as much as knowing the material.

Do I need a pre-licensing course before I can take the California exam?

No. Since January 1, 2026, the 20-hour producer pre-licensing course is gone, and the 12-hour ethics and California Insurance Code course is required before the license is issued, not before the exam.

What is on the California Property and Casualty exam?

The combined exam draws on CDI's Property and Casualty objectives: general insurance, property, casualty, personal lines, commercial coverages and pet insurance, in 150 questions over 3 hours.
