The six steps

  1. 1

    Complete pre-licensing education

    Maryland requires 20 hours of state-approved pre-licensing per line of authority (Life, Health, Property, Casualty, Personal Lines, Title). The course must be from an MIA-approved provider. Waivers are available for candidates with designations like CPCU, CLU, CIC, or with an employer affidavit.

  2. 2

    Schedule your PSI exam

    Maryland contracts with PSI for insurance license exams. Register at psiexams.com, pick a testing center, and pay the current exam fee (~$58 per attempt). {/* TODO: verify */}

  3. 3

    Pass the exam

    Maryland uses a 70% passing standard for resident producer exams. PSI sends your score directly to MIA within 24 hours.

  4. 4

    Submit your MIA license application

    Apply through NIPR or Sircon. Maryland license fees run ~$54 per producer license. {/* TODO: verify */}

  5. 5

    Background check

    Maryland may require a fingerprint-based background check for new resident producers. {/* TODO: verify */}

  6. 6

    Get appointed by a carrier

    A producer license alone doesn't authorize you to sell — you need at least one carrier appointment.
