The six steps

  1. 1

    Complete pre-licensing education

    Florida has one of the strictest PLE regimes in the country: 200 hours for a 2-20 General Lines (P&C) license, 40 hours for a 2-15 Life Health & Variable Annuity license, and 40 hours for a 2-14 Life license. The course must be from a DFS-approved provider — see Florida Statutes §626.7851 and Rule 69B-227.

  2. 2

    Apply with DFS BEFORE scheduling the exam

    Florida is unusual — you must apply for your license with the Department of Financial Services (DFS) at MyProfile.MyFloridaCFO.com FIRST, then DFS authorizes you to test. The application fee runs ~$50-$55 plus a $5 fingerprint processing fee. {/* TODO: verify */}

  3. 3

    Get fingerprinted

    Florida requires fingerprinting through MorphoTrust/IdentoGO. Cost is ~$48-$56. Results are sent directly to DFS.

  4. 4

    Schedule your Pearson VUE exam

    After DFS approves your application, Pearson VUE sends an Authorization to Test (ATT). Register at pearsonvue.com/fl/insurance, pick a testing center, and pay the current exam fee (~$44 per attempt). {/* TODO: verify */}

  5. 5

    Pass the exam

    Florida uses a 70% passing standard for resident producer exams. Pearson VUE sends your score directly to DFS within 24-48 hours.

  6. 6

    Get appointed by a carrier

    Florida producer licenses require at least one company appointment to be active. The carrier files the appointment with DFS.
