The six steps

  1. 1

    Complete pre-licensing education

    Colorado requires state-approved pre-licensing education for resident producers. {/* TODO: verify Colorado DOI's current PLE hours per line */} The course must be from a CO DOI-approved provider and your completion certificate filed before you can sit for the exam.

  2. 2

    Schedule your Pearson VUE exam

    Colorado contracts with Pearson VUE. Register at pearsonvue.com/co/insurance, pick a testing center, and pay the current exam fee (~$54 per attempt). {/* TODO: verify current rate */}

  3. 3

    Pass the exam

    Colorado uses a 70% passing standard for resident producer exams. Pearson VUE sends your score directly to the DOI within 24 hours.

  4. 4

    Submit your CO DOI license application

    Apply through NIPR or Sircon. Colorado license fees run roughly $48 per line. {/* TODO: verify CO DOI fee schedule */}

  5. 5

    Background check

    Colorado may require a fingerprint-based background check for new resident producers. {/* TODO: verify current CO DOI rule */}

  6. 6

    Get appointed by a carrier

    A producer license alone doesn't authorize you to sell — you need at least one carrier appointment. Most agencies handle this on day one of employment.
